Accesibility

A website for everybody

The website of Fragas do Mandeo is designed to promote accessibility for everybody, regardless of their technical, cognitive or physical capabilities.

Some people, by congenital malformations, illness, injury or age, have problems in handling the computer mouse, reading the contents, hearing the sound of the videos, etc. Accessibility issues also affect people with technical constraints, such as those who are hampered by slow computers or communications. A well-designed website helps to mitigate these constraints, facilitating the use of specific computer tools (such as screen voice readers), or accelerating page downloads.

To achieve this goal, the volunteers that participated in the creation of the website of Fragas do Mandeo, and do the maintenance now, tried to follow the guidelines of World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Its guidelines are drafted by the working group Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) and they are gathered on the guide Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), having issued version 2.0 at the time of writing these lines. You can take a look at the summary titled How to Meet WCAG 2.0.

Our website development took into account several measures to achieve a high degree of accessibility. The content is separated from the graphic aspect, being readable without style sheets (CSS). Drop-down menus are not used and navigation is simplified, allowing both direct reading through the menus and sequential reading like a book. Images and links have descriptive texts. It is not necessary to have JavaScript to navigate this website.

To facilitate the understanding of texts, they were drafted taking into account the readers’ different levels of knowledge in the field of natural sciences. Technical terms are not used in most parts of the pages or they are accompanied by an explanation. Those aimed at a more specialized audience have been removed to lighten the text.

The font size can be changed in the browser:

  • Netscape, Mozilla Firefox, Safari: pressing both keys Ctrl and “+” to increase it; the Ctrl key plus the “-” key to diminish it; Ctrl plus “=” to restore default size;
  • Internet Explorer: by means of the browser menu, selecting the options “View” > “Text size” (some versions allow you to use the Ctrl key and move the mouse wheel).

Tools used

For HTML code validation we used the Markup Validation Service and for validation of the style sheets we used the CSS Validation Service, both from W3C.

To check accessibility of the website, we used the computer tool TAW developed by Fundación CTIC, a non-profit organisation under control of the Principality of Asturias.

At WCAG 2.0 level, TAW classifies the information from the analysis of accessibility problems (in red), warnings that need to be manually reviewed (in amber) and non-verified issues because they can be automatized (in blue). This information is sorted by sections according to rules affecting perception, operation, understanding and conformity with standards.

After completing the tests on every page and applying the suggested recommendations, there is no accessibility problem detectable by TAW.

The tests performed do not absolutely guarantee accessibility of the website of Fragas do Mandeo. If you find any difficulty, please let us know and we will try to correct it. In section Contact you will find all the necessary information.
